The E.632 series is an Italian electric locomotive series .

history

E.633.070 with a freight train

In the 1980s, the Italian State Railways needed new freight locomotives . These should have a top speed of 130 km / h and be able to tow 800 tons on the level. With a gradient of 15 per mille, the locomotive should still be able to reach a speed of 100 km / h. The E.633 series was able to meet these requirements. The driver's cabs were equipped with the latest technology. During the development of the E.633, it became clear that a passenger train variant could also be built (especially for heavy push-pull trains with frequent stops) - this is how the E.632 came about. The E.632 and E.633 series differ only in the different gear ratios. This is why the E.633 has more tractive power, but its top speed is limited to 130 km / h. Five pre-series locomotives, 66 E.632 and 147 E.633 were built. The last series of the E.633 (201-240) shows some improvements and innovations, among other things it is equipped with multiple controls . The E.652 series emerged from the E.632 / 633 series , which (outwardly almost identical) is an improved and more powerful version of these locomotives. With a continuous output of 5,000 kilowatts, it reaches 160 km / h, but has the same pulling power as the E.633 and can be used in multiple control with the E.633.200 series. 176 machines were built. All locomotives (with the exception of the E.632 / 633 pre-series locomotives) are equipped with push-pull control.

commitment

The E.632s were used in the metropolitan areas of Milan and Turin in regional traffic in front of heavy push-pull trains from the start, and they still operate there today. The E.633 were (and are) used in freight traffic, but also like the E.632 in regional traffic. Today the E.632 only run in regional traffic, the use of the E.633 is limited to a few exceptions (e.g. on the route from Messina to Catania ) and the E.652 is completely limited to freight traffic. The pre-series locomotives are now decommissioned, with the exception of a few accidental losses, all series locomotives are still in use.
