Life

Erika Burkart's house on the Kapf

Erika Burkart was born in Aarau in 1922 and grew up in old houses near Aristau in Aargauer Freiamt - in Landhaus Kapf , the former summer residence of the prince abbots of Muri , converted into a wine and dining establishment . Her father, Walter Burkart (1883–1961), once a big game hunter in South America and the author of the book Der Reiherjäger vom Gran Chaco , looked after the restaurant, but over time he became his best guest himself. The mother, Marie Hedwig Glaser (1893–1972), worked as a teacher and secured the family's livelihood with other odd jobs. She introduced her two daughters to the realm of literature, especially legends and fairy tales.

After training as a primary school teacher at the Aarau teacher training college, Erika Burkart taught at various schools for a number of years - an activity that she had to give up in 1953 because of a heart disease. She herself felt liberated, and soon volumes of poetry were published at regular intervals, followed by novels and notes from 1970. In 2005 she was the first female author to receive the Grand Schiller Prize of the Swiss Schiller Foundation for her complete works.

Many of her poems were set to music by well-known composers, so u. a. by Gottfried von Eine , Rudolf Kelterborn , Gerd Kühr , Armin Schibler , János Tamás and Balz Trümpy .

Erika Burkart was married to the writer Ernst Halter until her death . Apart from a few longer stays and trips abroad, the couple lived in Landhaus Kapf near Aristau. She died on April 14, 2010 at the age of 88 in Muri in the canton of Aargau. Her estate is in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .
