The Swiss Literary Archive (SLA) of the Swiss National Library in Bern collects literary pre-empties and bequests in the four Swiss national languages German , French , Italian and Romansh .
The archive was opened in 1991 and is housed in the building of the Swiss National Library (NL). The foundation goes back to the will of the writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt , who died in 1990 , in which he bequeathed his estate to Switzerland on the condition that a national literary archive be created.
When it was founded, the SLA took on the manuscript department of what was then the state library - today the national library. In 2017, the Swiss Literature Archive comprised more than 250 (partial) estates, over 60 author libraries , around 20 institutional archives (e.g. publishers) and a large number of archives of living authors.
The holdings of the Swiss Literature Archive are recorded in the HelveticArchives database of the Swiss National Library.
