Josef Reinhart (born September 1, 1875 near Rüttenen ; † April 14, 1957 in Solothurn ) was a Swiss folk writer .

Life

Galmis

As a farmer's child, he grew up on a farm in Galmis, a small valley through which the road from Rüttenen to Balm near Günsberg leads. From 1894 Josef Reinhart worked as a primary school teacher in Niedererlinsbach and later in Schönenwerd .

After his first poetic attempts in the magazine of the student union Wengia , he published his first volume of poetry, Liedli ab em Land , in 1897 and, four years later, the Gschichtli ab em Land with considerable success . In 1903 the native Catholic converted to the Christian Catholic Church . In the years that followed, Reinhart's fame grew with the publication of further novellas and poems in Solothurn Swiss German as well as increasingly high German stories.

After studying in Zurich and Bern , he was elected to teach German at the seminar department of the Solothurn Cantonal School and subsequently moved to the capital of the canton with his family in 1912. As a co-founder and publisher of various magazines and series of publications, through his commitment to the organization of cultural events as well as in youth and adult education, but primarily through his continued writing activity - in which he again turned to dialect in the field of folk poetry, which, however, also extended to biographical and general educational works for young people (in German) - Josef Reinhart became a very respected personality in the city in which he lived from then on. From 1924 to 1927 he was senior journeyman (chairman) of the Solothurn pottery society , a lecture society founded in 1857.

His work has been recognized by various honors, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern in 1936 . An eleven-volume Reinhart complete edition was published by Verlag Sauerländer from 1944 to 1955 . The author, who retired in 1945, published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines until his death in 1957. In 1916, 1936 and 1952 he won prizes from the Swiss Schiller Foundation , and in 1944 the youth book prize from the Swiss Teachers' Association .

Josef Reinhart died on April 14, 1957 as a result of a stroke he had suffered a few days earlier . He is buried in an honorary grave donated by the canton in the St. Niklaus cemetery.

The estate of Joseph Reinhart is located in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .
