Until December 31, 2005, Niedererlinsbach was a political municipality in the Gösgen district of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .

With effect from January 1, 2006 Niedererlinsbach merged with Obererlinsbach to form the new municipality of Erlinsbach (SO) .

geography

Niedererlinsbach is 403  m above sea level. M. , three kilometers west of the city of Aarau (straight line). The village extends in a wide hollow between the Sagibach and the Erzbach , on the northern edge of the Aareniederung , at the southern foot of the Jura , in the extreme east of the canton of Solothurn.

The area of the 5.9 km² former municipality area comprised a section of the Solothurn Niederamt. The southern border runs along the Aare, which flows here in an approximately 1.5 km wide valley. At Niedererlinsbach, a large part of the water is diverted into a canal and used by a hydroelectric power station. The island of Grien , created between the original course of the Aare and today's canal, also belongs to the former municipal area. Niedererlinsbach extended north from the Aare over the Aumatt (valley floodplain ) and the terrain terrace of the Breiti into the hollow of the Erzbach . This left tributary of the Aare forms the eastern border.

The hollow of the Erzbach is closed off to the west by a forest height in the foothills of the Jura, which in turn is subdivided by several small valleys opening towards Niedererlinsbach. The highest elevations of this forest height are the Herrenholz ( 529  m above sea level ) and the Boden ( 503  m above sea level ). To the northwest, the municipal ban extended over the initially gently sloping and south-facing slope of the Gugenfeld to the Gugen (at 805  m above sea level, the highest point in Niedererlinsbach), which is part of the first Jura chain of the eastern Folded Jura . In 1997, 15% of the former municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 39% for forests and woodlands, 42% for agriculture and a little more than 4% was unproductive land.

A few individual farms belong to Niedererlinsbach. Neighboring communities of Niedererlinsbach were Eppenberg-Wöschnau , Schönenwerd , Niedergösgen , Stüsslingen and Obererlinsbach in the canton of Solothurn and Erlinsbach (AG) and Aarau in the canton of Aargau .

population

With 2222 inhabitants (at the end of 2004) Niedererlinsbach was one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Solothurn. 90.6% of the residents speak German, 2.3% speak Italian and 1.9% speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Niedererlinsbach was 766 in 1850 and 1085 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population increased slowly but steadily. An increased population increase has been observed since 1990 (1995 inhabitants). The settlement area of Niedererlinsbach has grown together seamlessly with those of Obererlinsbach and Erlinsbach (AG).

economy

Until well into the 20th century, Niedererlinsbach was predominantly an agricultural village. In the past, viticulture was widespread, but it was abandoned after the vines were infested by phylloxera . There are now some small vineyards again. Today agriculture , fruit growing and cattle breeding have only a minor role in the income structure of the population.

Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. A commercial and industrial zone has developed on the southern edge of the village. In Niedererlinsbach today there are companies in the building trade, machine tool construction, mechanical workshops, graphic studios and a printing company, among others. Gravel is mined in the Aare valley; Quarries are located on the eastern slope of the Gugen. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Aarau region.

traffic

Niedererlinsbach is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the connecting road from Olten along the northern bank of the Aare to Aarau . In Niedererlinsbach the road branches off over the Salhöhe to Frick or Sissach . The village is connected to the public transport network by the BOGG bus line ( Busbetrieb Olten Gösgen Gäu ), which serves the route from Olten to Niedererlinsbach, and the Aarau- Barmelweid line of the AAR bus + bahn .

history

Catholic Church

The Erzbachtal and the former municipality of Niedererlinsbach were already settled during the Bronze Age and the Roman Age, which has been proven by various scattered finds.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1173 under the name Arnlesbah . Later, the names Erndespah (1217), Arnesbah (1223) and Erlispach (1269) appeared. These names cannot be clearly assigned to one of the three Erlinsbach ( Erlinsbach (AG) , Niedererlinsbach, Obererlinsbach ). A first differentiation is recorded in writing from 1276 with Nidern Ernlispach . The place name goes back to a water body name and means stream of Arnold .

Since the Middle Ages , the Erzbach has formed the eastern border of Buchsgau, administered by the Counts of Frohburg . The Einsiedeln Monastery owned the church set and a Dinghof in Niedererlinsbach, which to the monastery in 1349 Königsfelden was sold. Jurisdiction over the village came to Aarau in 1417, then to the Johanniter von Biberstein and finally to the Falkensteiner , owners of the Gösgen estate. Due to financial difficulties, Thomas von Falkenstein had to sell the rule to Solothurn in 1458 . From then on Niedererlinsbach belonged to the Bailiwick of Gösgen and was the place of jurisdiction.

During the Reformation , the Erzbach, which ran through the village, became a denominational boundary. The Reformation was introduced in Erlinsbach (AG), which was then part of Bern. In contrast, Nieder- and Obererlinsbach stayed with the Catholic faith. Since Bern had abolished the Königsfelden monastery in the course of the Reformation, the church law also fell to him in Nieder- and Obererlinsbach. The only church in the valley was in Niedererlinsbach in Solothurn, over which Bern now had the say. As a result, there were numerous disputes about the use of the church until a new reformed church was built in Erlinsbach (AG) in 1565. Solothurn acquired the church set for Nieder- and Obererlinsbach in 1571 and reintroduced Catholic worship.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Niedererlinsbach belonged to the Solothurn administrative district during the Helvetic and from 1803 to the Gösgen district. Since the 1980s, the three municipalities Niedererlinsbach, Obererlinsbach and Erlinsbach (AG) have been working closely together with regard to infrastructure, education, and social and societal policy.

The idea of a merger of the Solothurn communities Niedererlinsbach and Obererlinsbach came up, and a merger project was prepared. This was approved on April 24, 2005 by the voters of both localities. In a further vote on September 27, 2005, the citizens at the community assembly voted in favor of the new name Erlinsbach (SO) (the maintenance of the name of the more populous community Niedererlinsbach was also up for discussion). With effect from January 1, 2006, the merger became legally binding.

Attractions

The church of St. Nicholas, originally from the Middle Ages, was replaced in 1869 by a new building in neo-Gothic form. In the old town center there are still some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
