Erlinsbach is a political municipality in the Gösgen district of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland , on the border with the canton of Aargau, about four kilometers (as the crow flies) west of Aarau. It was created on January 1, 2006 through the merger of the two former communities Niedererlinsbach and Obererlinsbach .

There is close cooperation in various areas with the neighboring municipality of Erlinsbach AG . Kindergarten and elementary school are run together according to the Aargau curriculum.

coat of arms

Divided by red and silver (white) covered by a right-angled bar in alternating colors and accompanied by two five-pointed stars also in alternating colors .

The coat of arms of the previous municipality of Niedererlinsbach was supplemented by the two stars, which symbolize the two parts of the municipality.

Nickname

On the one hand, Erlinsbach belongs to the canton of Aargau and on the other hand to the canton of Solothurn. In Erlinsbach Aargau the population is mainly Reformed and in the Solothurn canton part Catholic. That is why there were two churches in the valley. On Sunday the Erlinsbacher went to mass, but everyone stayed in their part of the canton. The Chilewäägli partly ran exactly along the stream that marks the canton border. Since you couldn't accept the other's denomination, you cursed each other across the stream. The old Erlinsbacher got so excited that they spat at each other across the stream ( speuzen in Swiss German ). In the surrounding villages the residents knew about this unattractive custom of the Erlinsbach people when going to church and therefore spoke of the Speuzer when one meant the Erlinsbacher. The name Speuz has been preserved in the region to this day .

Parish Church of St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas Church

The parish church of St. Nikolaus was built in 1871 according to the plans of the architect Wilhelm Keller , Lucerne, because the old church was too small. A document from 1173 also mentions a church that is believed to be dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra was consecrated. In 1466 a new building is mentioned. Today's church is the third building on this site. On February 15, 1778 Erlinsbach received the body of the catacomb saint Felix. On Christmas 1871 the first service could be celebrated in the new church. However, due to the Kulturkampf, it was only inaugurated on September 5, 1886. In 1910 the interior was lavishly furnished in the style of historicism, with three carved altars and decorative patterns on the walls and ceiling, made by the workshop of Carl Glauner, Will SG.

But already in 1956 a new era had dawned and the church was thoroughly rebuilt. Architect Hans Peter Baur, Basel, changed the interior, especially the choir, so decisively that one can speak of an almost new building. By moving the sacristy into the annex around the apse , the choir was significantly enlarged. Albert Schilling , Arlesheim, created the large, free-standing block altar, the tabernacle and the large cross by the ambo in 1956 . The main work by Ferdinand Gehr , Altstätten SG, is the painting of the apse with the monumental fresco of the Transfiguration of Christ on the mountain, which he painted in 1975. Gehr created two colored windows as early as 1956, followed in 1963 by the “Angel Cycle” in twelve windows. The forces of nature are represented as messengers of God, as angels. In 1970 a new gallery was built into the church with the new organ from Orgelbau Kuhn , Männedorf, with 29 sounding registers . - Fabrizio Brentini writes in the art guide of the church: “The interior of the Church of St. Nikolaus in Erlinsbach is one of the most successful redesigns of a historicist room…. Thanks to the unobtrusive fusion of architecture and art through the outstanding ensemble by Ferdinand Gehr, Erlinsbach has a harmonious church space that will not only fascinate visitors to the liturgy in the future. "

The six-part bell with the mood B ° - des '- es' - f '- as - b' was cast in 1932 by the Rüetschi foundry in Aarau.

Laurentius Chapel

Obererlinsbach, Laurentius Chapel

The Laurentius Chapel was built in 1697 on the site of a medieval chapel that was destroyed by the Guglers in 1375 . The chapel was inaugurated on Laurentius Day, August 10, 1698 and is now owned by the community of Obererlinsbach. The last major renovation was completed in 1979. The assumption arises that the border between the reformed Berneraargau and the Catholic Solothurn, which was regulated in 1665, resulted in a former chapel in the Laurenzenbad in Aargau being rebuilt in the Catholic area like a denominational boundary stone. In 1729 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt with the help of the Canton of Solothurn.

The most important work in the chapel is that of St. Altar dedicated to Laurentius in the early baroque style . The half-length " Jesus the Man of Sorrows " and a Pietà group are significant . They stand on consoles in the nave and are older than the chapel.
