Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G with Saukopfblende

The Saukopfblende was a name created after the war for an improvement of the cannon mantlet on German tanks of the Second World War . The original name, also used in the Wehrmacht , was pot cover .

The name is due to the pig's head- like shape of the screen that forms the transition between the gun and the turret. This rounded and edgeless shape deflected projectiles hitting the front, which significantly improved armor protection compared to the older, vertical panels. The Saukopfblende was used, among other things, in the Sd.Kfz armored car from 1943 . 234/2 , the Jagdpanzer 38 (t) , Jagdpanzer IV , Jagdpanther , the Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G produced by Alkett , and the Sturmgeschütz IV from Fried. Krupp Grusonwerk AG Magdeburg .

The Saukopf bezel was a little more expensive to manufacture than the roller or spherical shield previously used , but the gain in armor protection made up for it. This type of construction is no longer used in modern armored structures.
