Up until December 31, 2005, Obererlinsbach was a municipality in the Gösgen district of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .

Effective January 1, 2006, Obererlinsbach merged with Niedererlinsbach to form the new municipality of Erlinsbach (SO) .

geography

Obererlinsbach is 423  m above sea level. M. , three kilometers west-northwest of the city of Aarau (linear distance ). The village extends in a hollow formed by the Erzbach and on the slope adjacent to the west, at the southern foot of the Jura between Gugen and Egg , in the extreme east of the canton of Solothurn. The canton border runs right through the closed settlement and separates the town center by the chapel into a Solothurn and Aargau part.

The area of the 3.0 km² former municipal area comprised a section of the Solothurn Niederamt. The elongated but narrow area is bounded in the northeast by the Erzbach or by its right tributary Zwiselbach . The Erzbach occurs above Oberlerlinsbach from the Jurassic to plateau out and forms a hollow at the wide Jura foot. From this basin, the former community soil extended northwest into the Solothurn Folded Jura , which here has a complicated geological structure and is broken down into individual scales. The western boundary runs over the ridge of the Gugen ( 805  m above sea level ; first Jura chain ), the Rütmatt and the Rütflue ( 849  m above sea level ). In the far north-west, the slope of the Geissflue, which falls to the east, also belongs to Obererlinsbach. On the summit of the Geissflue, which lies on the main ridge of the Jura and forms the watershed between the Aare in the south and Ergolz or Sissle in the north, is 963  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Obererlinsbach. In 1997, 6% of the communal area at that time was accounted for by settlements, 46% for forests and trees and 48% for agriculture.

The hamlet of Breitmis ( 473  m above sea level ) at a narrow point in the Erzbach between Gugen and Egg as well as some individual farms belong to Obererlinsbach . Neighboring communities of Obererlinsbach were Niedererlinsbach , Stüsslingen , Rohr (SO) and Kienberg in the canton of Solothurn, Oltingen in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and Erlinsbach (AG) in the canton of Aargau .

population

With 694 inhabitants (at the end of 2004), Obererlinsbach was one of the smaller communities in the canton of Solothurn. 91.9% of the residents speak German, 2.2% speak Italian and 1.7% speak French (as of 2000). The population of Obererlinsbach was 463 in 1850 and 445 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population decreased slightly to 392 people by 1980. Since then a significant increase in population has been recorded. The settlement area of Obererlinsbach has now seamlessly merged with those of Niedererlinsbach and Erlinsbach (AG).

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Obererlinsbach was predominantly an agricultural village. In the past, viticulture was widespread, but it was abandoned after the vines were infested by phylloxera . There are now some small vineyards again. The water power of the Erzbach was previously used to operate a sawmill. Even today arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a metal construction and electronics company. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Aarau region.

traffic

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the connecting road from Aarau over the Salhöhe to Frick or Sissach . Obererlinsbach is connected to the public transport network by the AAR bus + bahn bus line , which runs from Aarau to Barmelweid .

history

The Erzbachtal and the former municipality of Obererlinsbach were already settled during the Bronze Age and the Roman Age, which has been proven by various scattered finds.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1173 under the name Arnlesbah . Later, the names Erndespah (1217), Arnesbah (1223) and Erlispach (1269) appeared. These names cannot be clearly assigned to one of the three Erlinsbach ( Erlinsbach (AG) , Niedererlinsbach , Obererlinsbach). A first differentiation is recorded in writing from 1276 with Obern Ernlispach . The place name goes back to a water body name and means stream of Arnold .

Since the Middle Ages , the Erzbach has formed the eastern border of Buchsgau, administered by the Counts of Frohburg . Einsiedeln Monastery also owned land in Obererlinsbach. Jurisdiction over the village came to Aarau in 1417, then to the Johanniter von Biberstein and finally to the Falkensteiner , owners of the Gösgen estate. Due to financial difficulties, Thomas von Falkenstein had to sell the rule to Solothurn in 1458 . From then on Obererlinsbach belonged to the Bailiwick of Gösgen.

During the Reformation , the Erzbach, which ran through the village, became a denominational boundary. The Reformation was introduced in Erlinsbach (AG), which was then part of Bern. In contrast, Nieder- and Obererlinsbach stayed with the Catholic faith. The time around the middle of the 16th century was marked by disputes about the use of the church between the different faiths.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Obererlinsbach belonged to the Solothurn administrative district during the Helvetic Republic and to the Gösgen district from 1803. Since the 1980s, the three municipalities of Obererlinsbach, Niedererlinsbach and Erlinsbach (AG) have been working closely together on infrastructure, education, and social and societal policy.

The idea of a merger of the Solothurn communities Niedererlinsbach and Obererlinsbach came up, and a merger project was prepared. This was approved on April 24, 2005 by the voters of both localities. In a further vote on September 27, 2005, the citizens at the community assembly voted for the new name Erlinsbach (SO) . With effect from January 1, 2006, the merger became legally binding.
