The farming village of Oltingen is 576  m above sea level. M. at the river Ergolz and at the foot of the Schafmatt.

history

In the Middle Ages, the border between the Sisgau and the Frickgau ran along the Ergolz. They separated Oltingen, which was first mentioned in a document in 1241, into two parts. The right bank half belonged as a fiefdom of the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg to the rule of Kienberg. The left bank was part of the Farnsburg family as early as 1372 and came to the city of Basel in 1461. Oltingen in Kienberg changed hands several times until it finally fell to Basel in the 17th century.

coat of arms

The municipality has only had its coat of arms since 1943. It shows a black sloping bar on a gold background, on which are three silver horseshoes with black nails. The coat of arms refers to the earlier importance of Oltingen as a starting point for a pass crossing, the colors remind of the former affiliation of half the village to the rule of Kienberg.
