In 1274 a "Richenbah" is mentioned for the first time. There is no agreement on the origin of the village name. The village came to the city of Basel in 1461. Assumptions that the village was originally a hamlet of Gelterkinden have not been confirmed. Nevertheless, both villages are closely connected as a parish, which is reflected in the same colors of the two municipal coats of arms.

In 1510, the Basel authorities had a fish pond built here. With about 3 hectares it extended over the entire plain west of the village. In the pond, carp were bred for the city of Basel. However, it was also a playground for numerous amphibians, which has earned the Rickenbachers the nickname "d Frösch". The residents of Rickenbach were busy with the care and maintenance of the pond. They also lived from modest agriculture, cattle breeding and later from trimmings. So it is not surprising that Rickenbach spoke out against the separation of the cantons by 36 to 21 votes in 1831.

Fruit growing is a very important pillar of local agriculture today. Mainly cherries and plums are grown.

The settlement of Rickenbach hardly changed over the centuries. Because of the drinking water problem, no major construction activity could begin. The main road to Buus has been running through the village center since 1848, where the schoolhouse built in 1830 is located at the southern entrance to the village. In 2001 this was completely renovated and today, with modern facilities, it has grown again to meet the requirements. The former two old inns, which reminded of the good reputation of Rickenbach as a health resort, now only exist in memory. There is only a small village pub and the “Barriere” restaurant. The community has had its own sports field since 1971 and its own multi-purpose hall since 1985.
