history
Diepflingen became known during the separation of the two half-cantons Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft in 1833 due to the fact that the municipality, after a close vote, submitted itself directly to the Swiss Confederation's daily statutes . However, this did not recognize the decision, and so the "Republic of Diepflingen" was over after nine days. The people of Diepflingen are still popularly referred to as "Republicans".
During the turmoil of separation in 1833, Diepflingen initially remained loyal to Basel with Gelterkinden, which exposed it to attacks by opponents. In order to evade the constant threat, the village declared itself a neutral Republic of Diepflingen on May 20, 1833. However, this only had a short duration of 9 days because the Federal Diet threatened the deployment of the army. Nevertheless, the former farming village is still lovingly called the republic today.
The village name was first mentioned in 1251 as Dyephlinchon. (Hof der Dietphalinge) became Dietphalinchova, Dietphlikon, and then Diepfliken, as the locals still call it today. Newcomers also call it Diepfligen and some "Neudiepfliker" even Diepflingen as the spelling, which makes the hair of the old locals stand on end. In 1363 the Counts of Frohburg, Tierstein and Habsburg set up a customs post in Diepflingen. In 1461 Diepflingen passed to the city of Basel. In 1671 a fire destroyed part of the village.
From the history of the settlement, mention should be made of a grave from the La Téne period, containing a bronze neck ring, five complete and two incomplete early La Téne fibulae. Other finds suggest the presence of a Roman villa.
coat of arms
Since 1939. A silver gate wall with a red gate and roof on a green floor in front of a black background. The coat of arms indicates the old Schwibbogen that belonged to the former customs office. The coat of arms was designed by the village schoolmaster at the time, Hans Marti. Flag: black and white red.
