history

Historical aerial photo from 3000 m by Walter Mittelholzer from 1922

The village of Anwil (hamlet of the Arno) first appeared in a document in 1276. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the property of the Counts of Alt-Homburg. From 1400 to 1534 it was gradually transferred to Basel . Anwil was a customs place until 1801, because the border with Austria ran behind the place . During the turmoil of canton division from 1831 to 1833, the village stopped at Basel and then had to join the Basel rural workers.

A golden horizontal stripe and below it on the left a black and on the right a silver half. The golden head of the shield indicates the former rulership of Homburg and the black / silver is reminiscent of Basel and the Lords of Kienberg.
