The Sissach district is one of five districts in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft . The main town is Sissach .
geography
The Sissach district is located in the southeast of the canton. It includes the Ergolztal with its numerous side valleys, which begins in the south at the Lower Hauenstein Pass on the border with the Canton of Solothurn . In the east and north, the district is bounded by chain of hills that belong to the Table Jura and form the transition to the canton of Aargau . The valley towards the Liestal district is only open in the northeast . The Sissach district is relatively sparsely populated and largely characterized by agriculture, forests and hill country. In contrast to the rest of the canton, it consists largely of small and tiny villages.
Neighboring districts
The district borders in the north on the Rheinfelden district in the canton of Aargau and in the east on the Laufenburg district , also in Aargau , in the south on the Gösgen district in the canton of Solothurn, in the southwest on the Waldenburg district and in the northwest on the Liestal district.
traffic
The railway line runs through the district from Basel to Olten , which overcomes the Jura chain through the Hauenstein base tunnel and is one of the two main feeders of the Gotthard line. To the west of the new route with the base tunnel, the old Hauenstein route runs through the Homburgertal. The latter is only used today with the S9, the Läufelfingerli, for regional traffic and also serves as an alternative route in the event of breakdowns or overloading in the Hauenstein tunnel.
The national road and the A2 motorway from Basel to Lucerne and the old pass road over the Unteren Hauenstein run parallel to the railway line.
Political communities
The Sissach district comprises (as of 2014) a total of 29 mostly relatively small communities. There is not a single city in the entire district. List of municipalities:
