The Liestal district is one of five districts in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft . The main town and administrative seat of the district is Liestal .
The district of Liestal is in the middle of the other four districts of the canton of Basel-Landschaft and is therefore centrally located. The communities in the Liestal district are (still) included in the Upper Basel area (as are the Waldenburg and Sissach districts). The district of Liestal borders Germany in the north ( district Lörrach , Baden-Württemberg ), in the northeast on the canton Aargau (district Rheinfelden ), in the east on the district Sissach , in the south on the district Waldenburg , in the west on the canton Solothurn (district Dorneck ) and in the northwest to the Arlesheim district . It is therefore simply not connected to the district of Laufen , which was part of the canton of Bern until the early 1990s .
After Arlesheim, the district of Liestal is the second largest and therefore the second most influential district in the canton in terms of population.
The municipalities of the district are oriented towards Liestal (Pratteln and Augst, which are sometimes incorrectly included in the Lower Basel area, also towards Basel ). As the canton capital, Liestal is also the most important place in the district, it is also by far the largest in terms of area. In Pratteln , however, since the great boom, slightly more people than live in Liestal (1970s) of the suburban municipalities to Basel, which Pratteln just heard.
The district is shaped very differently: In Pratteln and Augst, industry and housing estates dominate, Liestal with its agglomeration communities Frenkendorf, Füllinsdorf, Lausen, Bubendorf and Seltisberg is characterized by urban areas, in the other communities a rural image dominates.
