geography

Frenkendorf is 12 kilometers from the city center of Basel and 2 km from the canton capital Liestal. There are six neighboring communities: Füllinsdorf , Gempen (Canton of Solothurn), Liestal , Muttenz , Nuglar-St. Pantaleon (Canton Solothurn) and Pratteln . The border is around 14.5 kilometers long.

history

Frenkendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1249. The village was founded by an Alemannic clan under the leadership of a man named Franko. Originally the place was called "Frankovilare". The current name dates back to 1302. The foundations of a Gallo-Roman sanctuary from the 1st to 4th centuries, coins from 253 to 350 AD and remains of an early modern age were found on the Schauenburger Fluh (Schauenburg) . High watch. Neu-Schauenburg Castle dates from the 13th century, the previous building possibly from the 11th century; after the earthquake of 1356 the complex was rebuilt. Alt-Schauenburg Castle was settled between 1275 and 1356.

Frenkendorf was a part of the Frohburgischen , then episcopal. The rule of Schauenburg, whose high and low jurisdiction later belonged to Liestal. The lords of Eptingen from Pratteln acquired a large part of the village in the 14th and 15th centuries and sold it to the city of Basel in 1517-25. Frenkendorf came to the Liestal Office, but the high level of jurisdiction remained with the Farnsburg Office . Ecclesiastically Frenkendorf belonged to the parish of Munzach. From 1765 it formed a parish with Füllinsdorf.

In Roman times a path led through the village to Pratteln, which later also served the suppliers of the Basel silk ribbon manufacturers .

On August 3, 1833, at the Hülftenschanze on the border with Pratteln, an armed conflict took place between Basel-Städtische troops and the Landschäfter Resistance, through the outcome of which the half-canton of Basel-Land was created in its original district. A simple obelisk made of red sandstone in the grove north of the cemetery Outer Egg is a reminder of these events.

coat of arms

Frenkendorf is one of the few communities in the canton that has a historical coat of arms. It was carved into the stone as early as 1865 when the village fountain was built.

The coat of arms represents an increasing white crescent moon with a pensive face on a blue background. The colors come from the coat of arms of the Lords of Schauenburg (Schöwenberch), builders of the Alt-Schauenburg and Neu-Schauenburg castles . These were feudal bearers from Frenkendorf until they died out at the end of the 14th century, after which they passed into Basel ownership. (The Frenkendörfer coat of arms is also on the roof gable of the Basel Barfüsserkirche )
