Hülftenschanz
The Hülftenschanz is a field name in Frenkendorf , Canton Basel-Landschaft .
The battle of 1833
The place became famous because nearby, at the Frenkendörfler Griengrube ⊙ , on August 3, 1833, in connection with the separation of the Basel cantons, the decisive battle between troops from the city and the countryside took place. The city's troops were defeated.
The Feldschanze in der Hülften ⊙ , which gives the place its name , was previously taken without resistance by the troops of the city of Basel . The Baselbiet troops had withdrawn from this because they expected the Basel attack on Liestal via Pratteln-Erli-Frenkendorf.
During the Second World War , the Hülftenschanze barrier was built at this strategic location .
The monument
The Hülftendenkmal, an obelisk made of red sandstone , was erected in 1836 and is located near the Griengrube, north of the Egg cemetery. It is reminiscent of the struggle of the rural workers for their independence.
An inscription on the memorial also reminds of the almost 30-year-old senior court clerk Heinrich Hug from Thalwil who died in the battle . The application to make him the first honorary citizen of the young canton of Baselland was posthumously approved by the district administrator .
