Fiji was a British colony from 1874 to 1970 and an independent Commonwealth Realm in the Commonwealth of Nations from 1970 to 1987 . During this period the British monarch was the head of state, but in practice his functions were exercised by the governor prior to independence on October 10, 1970, and by the governor general prior to the proclamation of the republic on October 7, 1987.
