Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore
Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore GCMG (born November 26, 1829 in Argyll House , London , England , † January 30, 1912 in Chelsea , London) was a British colonial administrator.
The youngest son of the late Prime Minister George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen , he attended after high school at a boarding school , the Trinity College in Cambridge , where he in 1849 Chairman of the Cambridge Union Society was. After his dissertation in 1851, he worked from 1852 to 1855 as the private secretary of his father, the Prime Minister.
In 1861 he went to Canada as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick . From 1866 to 1870 he was governor of Trinidad and Tobago , followed by his tenure as governor of Mauritius (1871 to 1874). He was also governor of Fiji (1875 to 1880), governor of New Zealand (1880 to 1883) and finally governor of Ceylon (1883 to 1890).
On February 18, 1871, he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George . On February 6, 1898, he became Knight Grand Cross of the same order.
In 1893 he was promoted to Baron Stanmore , of Great Stanmore in the County of Middlesex . The title passed to his eldest son George after his death .
