Sir Arthur Purves Phayre (born May 7, 1812 in Shrewsbury , Shropshire , † December 14, 1885 in Bray , County Wicklow , Ireland ) was a British commissioner general, army officer and historian who first made the failed attempt to introduce European education into traditional Burmese Introduce institutions.

Live and act

After training at the Shrewsbury School in England, Phayre joined the Bengali army as a cadet in 1828 , where he soon became an officer in Moulmein in the Burmese province of Tenasserim . In 1846 he became assistant to the provincial commissioner. In 1849 he became commissioner of Arakan , where he learned the Burmese language fluently .

After the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852, Phayre became Commissioner of Pegu and played a significant role in relations between the Indian government and the new King Mindon Min of Burma. He acted as interpreter for the Burmese mission in Calcutta in 1854 and a year later he led a return mission to the Burmese capital Amarapura . Although no peace treaty was signed, an understanding was reached between Phayre and King Mindon Min, which prevented the outbreak of another war. In 1862 Phayre became Commissioner General for the entire province of British Burma (including Arakan, Tenasserim and Pegu). He signed a trade agreement with the king to facilitate trade between Upper and Lower Burma, and he became the British representative in the Burmese capital. Phayre left Burma in 1867. After he was governor of Mauritius from 1874 to 1878, he retired to Bray, Ireland. In 1878 he was knighted.

Phayre was a well-known scholar of Burmese culture and history. His book History of Burma from 1883 is one of the standard works on the history of Burma. His endeavors to introduce modern European education in the Buddhist monastery schools were ultimately unsuccessful.
