distribution and habitat

Distribution area of the Phayre glasses langur (green) and the Indochina glasses langur (red)

The distribution area of the Phayre-eyeglass langur stretches from Bangladesh and northeast India to Myanmar and southern China ( Yunnan ). Its habitat are primary and secondary forests with dense evergreen vegetation, bamboo vegetation , tea plantations as well as slopes and river banks.

Way of life

Like all Old World monkeys, these primates are diurnal. They mainly live in the trees, but occasionally come to the ground. They live in groups of 3 to 30 animals. In contrast to most other crested langurs, these are not only harem groups with one male, but can also include several males. They are territorial animals that defend their territory against foreign groups.

The diet of these animals consists mainly of leaves, but they also eat saplings and fruits. Like all Schlankaffen they have a multi-chambered stomach for better utilization of the difficult to digest food.

As a rule, the female gives birth to a single young animal, which, like all crested langurs, is initially orange-yellow in color.

status

The IUCN classifies the species as " critically endangered ". It is hunted for its meat, and traditional Chinese medicine ascribes beneficial properties to its gallstones . In addition, the ongoing destruction of the habitat by deforestation is likely to pose a threat.

Systematics

There are two subspecies: T. p. phayrei from the east of Bangladesh, the northeast of India and the west of Myanmar and T. p. shanicus from southwest China and north and east Myanmar. A former third subspecies, the Indochina spectacled langur ( T. crepusculus ) from the north of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, is now considered a separate species.

The Phayre spectacle langur, together with the Indochina spectacled langur, the southern spectacled langur and the tenasserim langur, form the obscurus group within the genus of the crested langur .
