He received his doctorate in 1993 as Dr. phil. nat. at the University of Zurich and completed his habilitation in 2003 at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover . Since 2003 he has been a Research Associate at the Anthropological Institute of the University of Zurich (Switzerland).
Thomas Geissmann has undertaken numerous primatological research expeditions to Africa, Madagascar and especially Southeast Asia, where he has been collecting field data in almost all countries of origin of the gibbons since 1990 . His scientific work includes publications in various anthropological and primatological areas. His research focuses on comparative biology, the protection of gibbons (great apes of the Hylobatidae family) and the evolution of primate communication. His research results and a full list of publications can be viewed on the Gibbon Research Lab website.
Thomas Geissmann is the founder and editor of the Gibbon Journal ( ISSN 1661-707X ) and initiator of the Gibbon Conservation Alliance.
Thomas Geissmann is a co-descriptor of two lemur species, the Northwestern or Sambirano woolly lemur ( Avahi unicolor ) and the Cleese woolly lemur ( Avahi cleesei ), as well as the Burmese snub-nosed monkey ( Rhinopithecus strykeri ).
In December 2003, Geissmann gave a lecture at the Anthropological Institute of the University of Zurich, in which he pointed out the imminent extinction of several species of gibbons, and that the public gibbons and their threat are largely unknown. Afterwards, some students from the Anthropological Institute decided to do something to protect the gibbons together with Thomas Geissmann. They founded the Gibbon Conservation Alliance , a non-profit organization committed to protecting gibbons, promoting research into gibbon biology, and educating people about gibbons and their acute threat.
