James Stuart Olson

James Stuart Olson (born 1946 in Downey , California ) is an American historian . He received his bachelor's degree in 1967 from Brigham Young University , his master's and Ph.D. at Stony Brook University in 1969 and 1972, respectively. Olsen began his career as an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University , where he was promoted to Distinguished Professor after years . He is married to Judith E. Olson and has four children.

Olson has authored over 40 books on a variety of historical subjects, including the history of the United States and other regions of the world, cancer , immigration, and the economy . He has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize .

While working on Bathsheba's Breast book on breast cancer , Olson had to undergo cancer treatment himself. The tumor in his hand resulted in the amputation of his forearm .
