The Brigham Young University (BYU) is a denominational university owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints (Mormons) and is part of the Church Educational System . It is located in Provo in the US state of Utah . The educational institution was founded in 1875 by the German high school teacher Karl G. Mäser as the Brigham Young Academy (Brigham Young Academy). It was named after Brigham Young , the second president of the denomination.

Since BYU is a denominational university, mainly members of the Church of Jesus Christ study there. In principle, however, it is open to anyone interested. As a denominational institution, it pursues a special educational goal that goes beyond a purely intellectual educational requirement and is intended to capture the whole personality in a balanced way. This is specified in the “BYU Mission Statement”. The first sentences are:

“Brigham Young University's mission, founded, funded, and directed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is to assist people in their pursuit of perfection and eternal life. This support is intended to enable a period of intensive learning in a stimulating environment, where a commitment to excellence is expected and the full realization of human possibilities is sought. "

For this reason, every student, regardless of their specialization, is required to attend courses on religious topics.

Code of conduct for students, faculty and employees

An “Honor Code,” written in accordance with the commandments and rules of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, governs not only academic conduct, but also morality and appropriate demeanor and appearance.

The code of honor requires:

  • Abstinence from illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea. These substances are forbidden according to the word of wisdom of the denomination.
  • honesty
  • Encouraging others to adhere to the code of honor
  • to live a chaste and virtuous life:
    • Appropriate, gender-specific behavior (no sexual harassment)
    • No involvement / employment with pornographic or indecent material
    • No inappropriate sexual activity (no sexual relationships outside of marriage)
  • Law abiding
  • Active participation in church services (according to the student's religion)
  • mutual respect
  • Clean language (no vulgar language)
  • Compliance with the house rules (visiting hours for people of the opposite sex)
  • Clothing and Appearance Standards: Follow the clothing, appearance and living guidelines. Skirts must reach the knee and shirts must not be sleeveless. Skin-tight, seamless, and baring clothing is not appropriate. Students should not wear a beard or a goatee. The length of the hairstyle must be above the ears and sideburns must not reach lower than half the height of the ears.
  • Students are not allowed to carry firearms on campus.

The point of the code of conduct, which allows a sexual relationship only between married, heterosexual partners, came under particularly strong criticism from outside. Anyone who does not comply can be expelled from the university.

BYU offers a bachelor's degree in 198 courses, a master's degree in 69 and a doctoral degree in 28. The university is divided into 11 colleges. In law and management, she was named one of the top 40 universities in the United States by US News & World Report .

In addition to the main campus in Provo, BYU operates study centers in Jerusalem , London , Paris and other locations to enable students to gain experience abroad.

The sister institutions BYU-Hawaii and BYU-Idaho are independent from BYU in Provo, but are also run by the Church and require adherence to the same code of honor.

Freedom of teaching

In 1992 the university drafted its current “Statement on Academic Freedom”. This prescribes restrictions on teaching freedom in three areas: Accordingly, no public statement (or statements in front of students) may be made that “(1) contradicts or counteracts fundamental church doctrine or policy, instead of analyzing or discussing it, (2) intentionally the church or attacks their general conduct, or (3) contravenes the code of conduct because the statement is dishonest, unchaste, profane or inappropriately disrespectful to others.
