Tara Westover (born September 27, 1986 in Clifton , Idaho ) is an American historian and writer. She was best known for her autobiography Educated: A Memoir (German: “Liberated: How education opened up the world to me”).

Life

Tara Westover was the youngest of seven siblings. She grew up the daughter of radical fundamentalist Mormons who taught their children themselves, with an emphasis on prepper and household skills , as well as religious texts. Westover first encountered a girl who was not home schooled but attended school when she was 13. She has been mistreated and injured by one of her older brothers since she was 15 years old without her parents intervening.

At 17, Westover left her family and educated herself so that she was admitted to Brigham Young University . She graduated with honors and received a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge with the support of a Gates Scholarship . Westover was a visiting fellow at Harvard University in 2010 before earning her PhD in history from Trinity College , Cambridge . In her dissertation she dealt with radical utopias in the 19th century.

With her first autobiographical work Educated about her childhood and subsequent educational efforts, she reached first place on The New York Times Best Seller list .
