history

The stadium opened as Cougars Stadium on October 2, 1964 , replacing a smaller 5,000-seat stadium of the same name. At first there was only standing room on both sides of the field with space for almost 30,000 spectators. A short time later, seats were set up, bringing the capacity to 35,000. There was even space for 45,000 spectators thanks to the temporary grandstands behind the field. In 1982 the stadium was expanded to create space for over 65,000 spectators. The playing area was lowered for this purpose and the athletics facility was removed. In late 2000, the name was changed to LaVell Edwards Stadium in honor of former coach LaVell Edwards .

In 2003, the number of luxury seats was increased in order to generate higher income. This reduced the capacity to 64,045 spectators and the BYU logo was created because of the blue and white luxury seats. In August 2008 a second scoreboard was also built above the north stand. The capacity was reduced in 2010 and 2011 due to the renovation of spaces for the disabled. In 2012, the old video walls were replaced with modern LED screens.
