The Wasatch Range ( English Wasatch Range or Wasatch Mountains ) [ ˈwɑːsætʃ ] is a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains .
The mountain range is located in the northeastern part of the Great Basin and extends from central Utah in a northerly direction - past the Great Salt Lake - to just beyond the federal border of Idaho . It is around 350 km long and an average of around 3000 meters high. The highest peaks are Mount Timpanogos and Mount Nebo with an altitude of more than 3600 meters.
The Wasatch chain is world-famous for the powder snow in its eleven ski areas. One of the slogans on Utah's license plates is “ Greatest Snow on Earth ”. In 2002 the Winter Olympics took place here.
The metropolitan area of the Wasatch Front , in which 80% of the state's population lives, extends west below the Wasatch chain in the central part of the US state of Utah .
