License plate (United States)
The license plates in the United States are issued by the individual states . A nationwide, uniform number plate does not exist, apart from certain official license plates and diplomatic license plates .
The license plates usually contain the name of the state at the top, at the bottom either the motto of the state (e.g. for Florida : The Sunshine State ) or less often (e.g. in Georgia ) the name of the county , in which the license plate was assigned. The Indian reservations issue their own license plates, which are based on the same principle, but indicate the Indian nationality and mostly also the state.
In addition to the usual number plates, the individual states also have themed labels that, for example, bear the logo of a certain organization or university. There are also signs for various hobbies and interests. The license plates for the individual states can generally be viewed and selected for the state on the website of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The state of Virginia has the largest selection, with more than 200 topics.
The license plates are numbered separately for each state. The color scheme varies from state to state and usually changes every few years. So have z. For example, currently Washington, DC blue text on a white background, New York blue on a yellow background, New Jersey black text on a yellow gradient, and Pennsylvania dark blue text on a white background with a blue border above and a yellow border below.
For an extra fee it is possible to receive a license plate of your choice, where you can choose the text for the license plate yourself, as long as it has not already been assigned and is not offensive. Many citizens use their license plates as a form of personal expression or to announce their hobbies. For example, you can see “ANN'SBMW” (“Anns BMW”), “LUVDOGS” (I love dogs) or “XLR8” (accelerate) on the street. In California , special characters (heart, star, hand and plus signs) are sometimes allowed on license plates. An example of such a license plate is “DOG ♥ R” (dog lover).
The license plates for trucks, agricultural vehicles and limousines vary compared to the car license plates and are mostly kept very simple. There are special license plates for diplomats, senators and government vehicles. Military vehicles in the USA, unless they are privately owned, do not have license plates.
In some states (e.g. Florida ) only the rear number plate is required; Some vehicle owners put a picture on the front in such cases, such as the sea eagle, the hometown or the US flag. For some time now, foreign license plates or brand names have also been used for this purpose; especially European ones that match the vehicle manufacturer's country, e.g. B. Italian on a Ferrari .
