McCook County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . It was named after former South Dakota Governor Edwin Stanton McCook . The county seat is in Salem .

geography

The county covers an area of ​​1,495 square kilometers; 7 square kilometers (0.46 percent) of it is water. It is divided into 17 townships : Benton, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Canistota, Emery, Grant, Greenland, Jefferson, Pearl, Montrose, Union, Ramsey, Richland, Salem, Spring Valley and Sun Prairie.

history

The county was incorporated on January 8, 1873, and its administrative organization was completed on June 15, 1878. It was named after Edwin Stanton McCook (1837–1873), an officer in the Union Army and Secretary of the Dakota Territory .

The Salem Rest Stop Tipi-Eastbound is one of nine entries for the county in the NRHP.

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 6, 2018).
