Hand County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States .

The district has an area of ​​1440 square kilometers; 9 square kilometers (0.25 percent) of this is water. It is divided into 40 townships: Alden, Alpha, Bates, Burdette, Campbell, Carlton, Cedar, Como, Florence, Gilbert, Glendale, Grand, Greenleaf, Hiland, Holden, Hulbert, Linn, Logan, Midland, Miller, Mondamin, Ohio , Ontario, Park, Pearl, Plato, Pleasant Valley, Ree Heights, Riverside, Rockdale, Rose Hill, St. Lawrence, Spring Hill, Spring Lake, Wheaton, and York; as well as one disorganized territory: Northwest Hand.

history

The county was formed on January 8, 1873 and the administrative organization was completed on September 1, 1882. It was named after George H. Hand (1837-1891) who was the United States Attorney for the Dakota Territory .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 1, 2018).
