Jackson County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Kadoka . About 50% of the 3031 inhabitants were native American Indians. Jackson County is one of the poorest counties in the United States. Much of the county is under the administration of the federal government, either indirectly through the Bureau of Indian Affairs , or directly through the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service .

Jackson County covers an area of 4,846 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers (0.4 percent) is water. 57 percent of the area, the area south of the White River , belongs to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . Large areas of the county are also part of Badlands National Park and Buffalo Gap National Grassland .
It is divided into 16 townships: Grandview II, Interior, Jewett, Little Buffalo, Wall and Weta; and four disorganized territories: East Jackson, Northwest Jackson, Southeast Jackson, and Southwest Jackson.
history
The county was established on March 8, 1883 and dissolved on June 3, 1909. It was formed again on November 3, 1914, and the administrative organization was completed on February 9, 1915. It is named for John R. Jackson, a member of the Dakota Territory Legislative Assembly at the time the county was first established.
The county has a site of particular national importance, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site . Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 2, 2018).
