Hughes County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Pierre , the capital of South Dakota.

The district has an area of ​​2073 square kilometers; of which 154 square kilometers (7.42%) are water surfaces. It is divided into two townships: Raber and Valley; and three disorganized territories: West Hughes, North Hughes, and Crow Creek.

history

The county was incorporated on January 8, 1873, and its administrative organization was completed on November 26, 1880. It was named after Alexander Hughes, who was an attorney and president of the Legislative Assembly of the Dakota Territory .

The South Dakota State Capitol is one of 42 entries for the county in the NRHP.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the archeological site Arzberger Site . 42 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 2, 2018).
