Stanley County is a county in South Dakota , United States . It is named after Major General David S. Stanley of the Union Army. The only city is Fort Pierre , which is also where the county seat is located. The local time is UTC : +7 hours. According to an official estimate by the United States Census Bureau dated July 1, 2006, the county had a population of 2,815. The county seat is in Fort Pierre.

history

Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Fort Pierre Chouteau and Verendrye Site . Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 9, 2018).
