Ziebach County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . It is one of the poorest counties in the United States. The county seat is in Dupree .
geography
The county covers an area of 5,105 square kilometers. Of this, around 5082 square kilometers are land and 23 square kilometers (0.44 percent) are water. The district is divided into three disorganized territories: Dupree, North Ziebach and South Ziebach.
Almost the entire county is within the Cheyenne River Reservation , an Indian reservation . A small part of the district on its northernmost border belongs to the Standing Rock Reservation . This makes Ziebach County one of five counties in South Dakota that are entirely on Indian reservations.
history
The county is named after Francis M. Ziebach , South Dakota's first governor . He was born near Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 1830. He died at the age of 99 on September 20, 1929.
One of the county's buildings is on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of August 9, 2018, the Ziebach County Courthouse .
