Haakon County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States .

The district has an area of ​​4732 square kilometers; 37 square kilometers (0.78 percent) of this is water. It is divided into two disorganized territories: East Haakon and West Haakon.

history

Haakon County was incorporated on November 3, 1914, and its administrative organization was completed on February 8, 1915. It was named after the Norwegian King Haakon VII , also to win support from Norway for the new county. This makes the district one of nine in the state named after a person who did not live in South Dakota. South Dakota is a center of Norwegian immigrants in the United States.

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of July 31, 2018, the Waddell Block .
