Dewey County is a county in the north of the US state of South Dakota , United States .
geography
The county covers an area of 6,334 square kilometers; 370 square kilometers (2.07 percent) of this is water. Almost the entire area belongs to the Cheyenne River Reservation , the northern part belongs to the Standing Rock Reservation . This makes Dewey County one of five counties in South Dakota that are entirely on Indian reservations. The county is divided into two disorganized territories: North Dewey and South Dewey.
history
The county was incorporated as Rusk County on January 8, 1873 . On March 9, 1883, the name was changed to the current name. The administrative organization was completed on December 3, 1910. The name goes back to William Pitt Dewey, who was the chief surveyor (eng .: "Surveyor General") of the Dakota Territory and was a member of its legislative assembly.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Molstad Village . Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 31, 2018).
