Davison County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . It is located in the southeast of the state and has a population of 18,741. The county seat is Mitchell .

geography

The district has an area of ​​1,131 square kilometers; of which 3 square kilometers (0.31 percent) are water. It is divided into 12 townships: Badger, Baker, Beulah, Blenden, John, Lisbon, Mitchell, Mount Vernon, Perry, Prosper, Rome and Union.

history

The county was formed on January 8, 1873 and the administrative organization was completed on July 31, 1874. It was named after Henry C. Davison (? –1874), a trader and from 1869 one of the first settlers in the region.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Mitchell Archaeological Site . 24 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 30, 2018).
