Oglala Lakota County , until March 2015 Shannon County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States .

The county is one of two in South Dakota that does not have its own administration and therefore no official county seat . Instead, a contract regulates that the administration of the neighboring Fall River County in Hot Springs also looks after Oglala Lakota County.

The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited. It's the only county in the state.

In March 2015, a referendum decided that the county name should be changed from Shannon to Oglala Lakota. The old name was reminiscent of a Supreme Court judge in South Dakota, the new name is derived from the Oglala Lakota people .

The county is one of the poorest in the country in terms of its per capita income. At just 66.81 years in 2014, it is also the county with the lowest average life expectancy in the country.

The county covers an area of ​​5,430 square kilometers; 7 square kilometers (0.13 percent) of it is water. It is divided into two disorganized territories: West Oglala Lakota and East Oglala Lakota. In Oglala Lakota County is the headwaters of the Little White River (German: Kleiner Weißer Fluss ).

The entire county belongs to the Pine Ridge Reservation , one of the poorest areas on the American double continent. Part of Oglala Lakota County is part of Badlands National Park .

history

The county was formed on January 11, 1875 as Shannon County and named after Peter Shannon (1821-1899), the chief judge of the Dakota Territory .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Wounded Knee Battlefield .

According to the 2000 census, 94% of the population were Indians. Most of them belong to the Oglala tribe.
