The Little White River ( English for "small white river") is a 377 km long right tributary of the White River in the US state of South Dakota .
River course
The Little White River has its source in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southeast Oglala Lakota County . It flows in a predominantly easterly direction past the settlement of Batesland . North of the Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge , it is dammed to the Little White River Reservoir . The river later crosses the Rosebud Indian Reservation and turns to the northeast. About 30 km above the mouth of the White River is not far from the right bank of the river. The Little White River eventually flows into the White River, a tributary of the Missouri River . The Little White River flows through the counties of Oglala Lakota, Bennett , Todd and Melette .
Hydrology
The catchment area of the Little White River covers 4809 km², the effective catchment area is 4638 km². The mean discharge 24 km above the mouth north of White River is 4.1 m³ / s.
