Pine Ridge ( Lakota : wazíbló) is a settlement in Oglala Lakota County in the US state of South Dakota . Pine Ridge is not a community in the sense of US law, but a census-designated place . Pine Ridge is the seat of the administration of the Indian reservation of the same name .

Pine Ridge had 3,308 permanent residents according to a 2010 census.

The settlement borders Whiteclay , Nebraska , to the south . Pine Ridge was named after the pine trees that grow on the slopes in the area. The settlement was founded as a base for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and was therefore originally called the Pine Ridge Agency. Pine Ridge is in the area of Wounded Knee , the site of the 1890 massacre of Native Americans of the same name. The name is a symbol of the oppression of the indigenous population by white settlers. Pine Ridge is predominantly (94%) inhabited by Oglala -Lakota- Sioux- Indians. The settlement is the seat of the Red Cloud Indian School founded by Catholic Jesuits in 1888 , which was called Holy Rosary Mission until 1969. Pine Ridge also has a public school. Pine Ridge continues to be a BIA location. Russell Means , the well-known actor, activist, and leader of the American Indian Movement , was from the Pine Ridge area.

  2. In 1969, Holy Rosary Mission was officially renamed Red Cloud Indian School, both as a token of respect for the man whose work had made it possible to found the school and as part of a program of re-identification meant to demonstrate to the world that Red Cloud was not meant to be an organization of cultural imperialism, but rather the product of a lasting bond between groups of two separate cultures who wanted to enhance the best parts of both worlds to serve the people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
