The National Highway 87 (or NH 87 ) is a National Highway in the south of India . He crosses the famous Pamban Bridge (Annai Indira Gandhi) before crossing to Pamban Island . The total length is 154 km (96 miles). The 5 km long road between Mukundarayar Chathiram and Dhanushkodi was destroyed during the North Indian ocean cyclone season in 1963 and was never rebuilt. The Indian government recently announced that the destroyed line will be rebuilt at a cost of 250 million Indian rupees . The road between Madurai and Ramanathapuram will soon be converted from the current road to a four-lane highway. The Minister for Road Transport and Shipping , Nitin Gadkari , took part in the laying of the foundation stone for the 1,387 crore rupee (approx. 183 million euros) project in Madurai on July 17, 2015. Due to the initial expenditure of 900 Crore Rupees, the project has now been sanctioned. The 75 km stretch from Madurai to Paramakudi will now be converted into a four-lane road. The remainder of the 39 km stretch from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram is a two-lane road with paved shoulders. In addition to the NH-49 , this project is one of the largest implemented by the NHAI in Tamil Nadu .
