The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) ( Hindi : भारतीय राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग प्राधिकरण) is an independent agency of the Indian government. The NHAI has a central role in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways . The agency is responsible for a road network of over 70,000 km.

history

The NHAI was established through the passage of the National Highway Authority of India Act 1988. In February 1995 the agency became formally independent.

NAHI is responsible for the planning and construction, maintenance and operation of the national highways with a total length of 70,934 km (2011).

Projects

One of the tasks of the NHAI is to implement the National Highways Development Project (NHDP). The project is divided into the following phases

  • Phase I: Approved in December 2000 at an estimated cost of 300 billion rupees . These include the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and parts of the north-south and east-west corridors , as well as the connection of the most important seaports to the national highways.
  • Phase II: Approved in December 2003 at an estimated cost of 343 billion rupees: Completion of the NS-OW corridor and another 486 km of national highways.
  • Phase IIIA: Approved in March 2005 at an estimated cost of 222 billion rupees: Four-lane expansion of 4035 km of national highways.
  • Phase IIIB: Approved in April 2006 at an estimated cost of 543 billion rupees: Four-lane expansion of 8074 km of national highways.
  • Phase V: Approved in October 2006: Six-lane expansion of 6500 km (including 5700 km in the GQ) of National Highways.
  • Phase VI: Approved in November 2006: Extension of 1000 km of National Expressways .
  • Phase VII: Approved December 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs.167 billion. Thereby bypasses and crossings will be expanded to remove selected bottlenecks.

The NHAI helps implement the Special Accelerated Road Development Program for North Eastern Region (SARDP-NE); the program ensures the four-lane expansion of national highways between the capitals of the states in northeastern India .
