The North-South and East-West Corridor is the largest construction project for national highways in India . The aim of the construction project is to connect the northernmost and southernmost as well as the easternmost and westernmost places in the country with a 7300 km long road link on the standard of a four- or six-lane highway. The north-south connection extends from Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south with a branch to Kochi . The east-west connection extends from Porbandar in the west to Silchar in the east. The construction of the corridor is part of the National Highways Development Project and is overseen by the National Highways Authority of India .

route

Only the following sections of the National Highways are used along the corridor:

North-South Corridor (length: 4000 km): NH 1A between Srinagar and Jalandhar , NH 1 between Jalandhar and Delhi , NH 2 between Delhi and Agra , NH 3 between Agra and Gwalior , NH 75 between Gwalior and Jhansi , NH 26 between Jhansi and Lakhnadon , NH 7 between Lakhnadon and Kanyakumari , NH 47 from Salem via Coimbatore to Kochi

East-West Corridor (length: 3300 km): NH 8B between Porbandar and Rajkot , NH 8A between Rajkot and Samakhiali , NH 15 between Samkhiali and Radhanpur , NH 14 between Radhanpur and Pindwara , NH 76 between Pindwara and Shivpuri , NH 25 between Shivpuri and Lucknow , NH 28 between Lucknow and Muzaffarpur , NH 57 between Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga Purnia , NH 31 between Purnia and Galgalia , NH 31C between Galgalia and Bijni , NH 31 between Bijni and Guwahati , NH 37 between Guwahati and Nagaon , NH 36 between Nagaon and Dabaka , NH 54 between Dabaka and Silchar

In April 2010, the Indian government issued a new system for national highway numbers. With the implementation of this new system, the connection of the north-south corridor from Srinagar to Kanyakumari will become the new National Highway 44.
