Gorakhpur ( Hindi : गोरखपुर , Urdu : گورکھپور; Gorakhpur , [ ˈgoːrʌkʰpʊr ]) is a district capital in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with a population of around 670,000 .
The name Gorakhpur is derived from Gorakhnath , one of the nine Nath masters ( navnaths ) and the founder of the religious group of the Nath Pantha sect, to which the city's most important temple is dedicated.

Gorakhpur is located on the always flood-prone Rapti River in the flat landscape of the Terai at an altitude of only about 80 m above sea level. d. M. almost 100 km (driving distance) from the border with Nepal. The next larger cities are Varanasi (approx. 200 km south) and Lucknow (approx. 270 km west).

Gorakhpur is an important transportation hub. National Highway 28 from Lucknow to Barauni in Bihar and National Highway 29 from Varanasi to the Nepalese border cross here. Gorakhpur is the seat of the North Eastern Railway , a regional company of Indian Railways . There are numerous train connections from Gorakhpur station to all major cities in northern India. The Gorakhpur Airport (IATA code: GOP) is mainly used by the Indian Air Force, since 2003, but there are also several times weekly scheduled flights to Delhi and other Indian cities.

The majority of the population, which grew from around 65,000 to around 620,000 inhabitants in the 20th century, mainly due to immigration, are made up of Hindus (approx. 70%), there is also a significant proportion of Muslims (approx. 25%); Buddhists , Jains , Sikhs and Christians form smaller minorities. history
Originally known as Ramgram , the city is said to have been founded around 1400. At the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar I , it was the capital of a district ( sarkar ). Gorakhpur later came under the rule of the Nawabs of Oudh , before they ceded the city to the British East India Company in 1801. After Indian independence (1947) Gorakhpur was incorporated into the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Attractions
- The most important temple in the city is the Gorakhnath Temple , built in the 18th or 19th century and dedicated to the founder of the Hindu Nath Pantha sect (see Hindu order ).
- The Kali temple is also of great importance to devout Hindus.
- The Archaeological Museum shows sculptures and paintings from Gorakhpur and its surroundings.
- The Taramandal planetarium is mainly of interest to Indians. Sky observations are hardly possible because of the almost constantly hazy sky.
- Ambedkar Park bears the name of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar , a leader of the Indian independence movement and a fighter against the caste system .
