Aligarh ( Hindi अलीगढ़ , Urdu علی گڑھ, Alīgaṛh [ ˈʌliːɡʌɽʰ ]) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and the administrative seat of the Aligarh district of the same name .
Aligarh had about 870,000 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The city is located approximately 120 kilometers southeast of Delhi .
Located at an average altitude of 193 meters, the place is best known for its Aligarh Muslim University , founded in 1875 .
Aligarh is located in the basins of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers . The NH 91 ( Grand Trunk Road ) runs through the city. The story goes back to the 12th century. In 1803 it was occupied by the British in the Second Marath War.
