Kanpur around 1810

In 1207 Raja Kanti Deo von Prayag founded the village of Kohna in what is now the city . Kanpur was mentioned for the first time in 1579.

From 1773 to 1801 Kanpur was part of the Kingdom of Avadh (also called Oudh ). In 1801 British troops occupied the place. Under the influence of the British East India Company , many companies settled in Kanpur, which led to rapid population growth.

During the Indian uprising of 1857 , Kanpur was one of the centers of conflict between the Indian and British sides. The siege of the British garrison of Kanpur plays a special role in British historiography because of the massacres committed. Brigadier General Hugh Wheeler defended the garrison against insurgent troops under the leadership of Nana Sahib for weeks , but then had to accept the offer of surrender, which offered the British garrison the prospect of free withdrawal by boat to Allahabad . While the retreating garrison on the banks of the Ganges boarded the boats, Indian troops opened fire. In the fight that followed, all male British men were killed except for four men who were able to swim to safety. The 125 surviving women and children were brought back to Kanpur and locked up in Bibighar . Shortly before British troops under Sir Henry Havelock recaptured the city, they were murdered and the bodies thrown into a well not far from Bibighar.

Since India's independence from Great Britain on August 15, 1947, the city has belonged to the newly established state.

A park at the site of the well into which the corpses were thrown at the time commemorates the massacre of defenseless women and children. The park was only open to Europeans and Indian Christians until India's independence, after which it was redesigned. Today there are also monuments to Nana Sahib and one of the Indian leaders of the rebels, Tantya Tope . The British built a church on the site of the garrison, in which the dead of Kanpur are remembered today. Stones mark the course of the garrison around the church.

In December 1959 the IIT Kanpur ( Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur) was founded by the Indian government. It is one of the seven elite technical universities in India.

There are some training facilities for Indian music and for Kathak dance. Kanpur is the center of the most famous Nautanki dance theater style.
