Indian Institute of Technology
Map of all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology |
Indian Institute of Technology , IIT for short , is the name of several engineering and technology -oriented university educational institutions in India . The first IITs were founded in 1950 to build up their own scientific elite. They were established by the Indian government for this purpose and are considered "institutes of national importance".
The IIT entrance exam has been called one of the toughest exams in the world. 300,000 students take part annually. With 6,500 freshmen, however, only two out of a hundred applicants are admitted. In order to gain admission to study computer science or electrical engineering in Mumbai or Delhi, it is even necessary to be among the top 300 (0.1 percent equivalent).
Some IITs were created with financial and technical support from UNESCO , Germany , the USA and the Soviet Union . Each of these educational institutions is an independent university linked to the others by a joint IIT council that is entrusted with administrative matters. There is a joint entrance exam for the IITs; Applicants are not entitled to be assigned to a specific institute.
In the course of the success of these institutions, their own degrees such as the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), In contrast to the Bachelor of Engineering (BE) awarded by most other Indian universities, and similar institutes in other disciplines were modeled on the IITs created ( National Institute of Technology , Indian Institute of Management , Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management, and Indian Institute of Information Technology ).
IIT has become an internationally renowned brand and many graduates find work in the USA or other countries (contrary to the original intention of keeping the graduates in the country).
