biography

Manohar Parrikar was born on December 13, 1955 in the city of Mapusa in northern Goa. He studied metallurgy at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and graduated with a bachelor's degree . In 1994 he was one of the first four MPs to enter the parliament of the state of Goa for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Parrikar was able to defend his constituency of Panaji in the four subsequent elections (1999, 2002, 2007 and 2012). After the BJP became the second largest party in 1999, Parrikar took over the office of opposition leader . After the ruling Congress Party had split into two factions and some of the Congress MPs had defected to the BJP, Manohar Parrikar was elected Chief Minister on October 24, 2000. This was the first time that the BJP came to power in Goa. After the early elections in 2002, Parrikar was confirmed in office. During the legislative period he lost the parliamentary majority and had to resign as Chief Minister on February 2, 2005. For the remainder of the legislature and after the 2007 election, which the Congress party won, Parrikar returned to serve as opposition leader. In the 2012 election, the BJP won an absolute majority, so Manohar Parrikar was sworn in again as Chief Minister on March 9, 2012.

On November 9, 2014, Parrikar was appointed Minister of Defense in the Modi I cabinet as part of a cabinet reshuffle . He handed over the office of Chief Minister to his party colleague Laxmikant Parsekar , but made no secret of the fact that he had followed a call of duty and would like to return to Goa. He has also been publicly criticized for flying from Delhi to Goa and back every weekend. The opportunity to return came in the 2017 parliamentary elections in Goa. Parrikar essentially organized the BJP election campaign. The BJP lost significantly, but was able to form a coalition with two other Goanese parties. On March 16, 2017, Manohar Parrikar was re-elected Chief Minister of Goa.

Parrikar died on March 17, 2019 at his son's home in Panaji of pancreatic cancer that he was diagnosed with more than a year ago. The Indian government declared March 18, 2019 a day of mourning in Goa.
