Mapusa is a city in the Indian state of Goa .

The city is that part of the North Goa District . Mapusa has the status of a Municipal Council . The city is divided into 15 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

The city's population is 39,989, according to the 2011 census. Mapusa has a gender ratio of 968 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 92.1% in 2011. Almost 69% of the population are Hindus , approx. 17% are Christians, approx. 14% are Muslims and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

economy

Mapusa is close to one of the most important centers of the tourism industry in Goa. Mapusa's proximity to many of the beaches in northern Goa makes it a suitable base during the tourist season (November to April). Since Mapusa is a mainly commercial (for locals) city with a large resident population, Mapusa only has a limited number of hotels and accommodations. Its traditional market is also of economic importance.

Sightseeing

Mapusa doesn't have many sights of its own. There are a couple of colonial town buildings on Altinho Hill. There are also several temples and churches. The Church of Our Lady of Miracles was built in 1594 and has since been rebuilt several times.
