history

Much of what is now North Goa ( Pernem , Bicholim and Sattari ) was once under the Kingdom of Sawantwadi . While Ponda alternated between the Kingdom of Sunda , the Marathas, and the Kingdom of Sawantwadi. Hence, these areas were seen as safe havens for the Hindus, who lived in constant fear of the Portuguese Inquisition . These areas were finally conquered by the Portuguese in the late 18th century. They then stayed with the Portuguese until they were annexed by India in 1961.

Goa and two other former Portuguese enclaves became the union territory of Goa with Daman and Diu . Goa was organized in a single district in 1965. On May 30, 1987, Goa became statehood (while Daman and Diu remained a union territory) and Goa was reorganized into two districts, North Goa and South Goa.
