Panaji ( Konkani / Marathi : पणजी , Paṇajī ; formerly also Nova Goa , "New Goa" in Portuguese ) is the capital of the state of Goa in western India .

Panaji is the official name of the city today. During the Portuguese rule it was known as Nova Goa , later also English New Goa ; the names Pangim (Portuguese) and Panjim (English) were also used.

history

Portuguese house in the old town of Panaji

Panaji was originally a small suburb of Velha Goa . After several epidemics in the first half of the 18th century in what had been the capital of the Portuguese colony Portuguese India , Panaji gained importance: in 1759 it became the seat of the viceroy, in 1843 it became the capital of the colony and was given the name Nova Goa. After the occupation of the colony by the Indian army in 1961, Panaji became the capital of the union territories of Goa , Daman and Diu , and in 1987, when Goa was proclaimed an Indian state, its capital.

The town

Panaji is the third largest city in Goa after Mormugao and Margao . The area is about 36 km², the population was 40,017 on March 1, 2011 (with suburbs about 100,000); as a result of the numerous government institutions, the number of those present on working days is much higher.

Panaji is located on the left bank of the Mandovi River and is approximately 54 kilometers from Dabolim International Airport (IATA: GOI).

There are numerous buildings in the Portuguese colonial style, especially in the city center. Including the church Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception from 1619. The city also houses the Hindu Mahalaxmi temple and the Jama Masjid mosque.

There is a legal regulation according to which the plaster on the buildings in the city center, which is regularly badly damaged by the monsoons , must be repaired annually. Other architectural monuments can be found in Old Goa . Today, however, Panaji is also a modern city with growing economic importance.
